ROSMAN — The Draughn football team’s second game back following a monthlong, Hurricane Helene-imposed hiatus produced a blowout win, the team’s first victory since winning at Owen on Sept. 20.
The Wildcats cruised past host Rosman on Friday night in Western Highlands 1A/2A Conference action, winning 51-6.
DHS (4-3, 2-1 WHC) got on the board first with Marshall Brinkley’s 17-yard touchdown run. Quarterback Sterling Radabaugh was next, running one in from 7 yards away and completing the two-point conversion pass to tight end Jacob Mull for a 14-0 advantage. Brinkley’s second TD of the night was a 7-yarder, and it was followed by a Bryson Seagle touchdown to put Draughn up 26-0.
The Wildcats’ next TD came on defense as Cayden Roscoe returned an interception to the house. After that, the lead became 38-0 as Radabaugh scored on a 48-yard run. After the Tigers scored their lone TD, Kayden Lytle had a 76-yard kickoff return touchdown to make it 44-6 DHS. Draughn got another defensive TD to cap the scoring as Seagle returned a fumble 98 yards to set the final 45-point margin of victory.

Brinkley (9-78-2), Radabaugh (3-58-2) and Seagle (4-54-1) led the Wildcats on the ground. Radabaugh completed 11 of 15 passes for 192 yards, connecting with receivers Connor Houston (2-85), Lytle (4-58), Mull (2-28), Jack Charlet (2-16) and Brinkley (1-5).
West Lincoln 13, East Burke 6
The Cavaliers (1-6, 0-4 Catawba Valley 2A Conf.) came out on the short end of a low-scoring conference game at home in Icard on Friday, remaining winless in league play.
The Rebels opened up a 13-0 lead by halftime before Cannon Morrison’s receiving touchdown in the third quarter brought EBHS within one possession.
But EB was intercepted with under a minute to go to close out the contest.
GIRLS TENNIS
East Burke at 2A state championship
Senior Braelyn Stilwell represented the Lady Cavaliers at the NCHSAA 2A individual state championships in singles on Friday and Saturday at Ting Park in Holly Springs.
On Friday in the first round, Stilwell defeated Surry Central’s 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. Later, she won her quarterfinal match over Elizabeth City Northeastern’s Jada Simpson 6-2, 6-2.
Saturday saw Stilwell play her semifinal match against Pine Lake Prep’s Mallory Aull, losing 6-0, 6-1. Aull eventually was crowned the 2A singles state champion.
NCSSM-AV¶ÌÊÓƵ at 1A state championships
The Lady Dragons had berths in both singles and doubles at the NCHSAA 1A individual state championships on Friday and Saturday at Cary Tennis Center.
In singles, Manya Nallagangu defeated Eno River Academy’s Chiara Menolascino 6-1, 6-0 in the first round before falling to Bishop McGuinness’ Lucia Neves 6-2, 6-0 in the semifinals.
And in doubles, Ananya Sriram/Will Levine topped Chatham Charter’s Mak Allen/Maggie Moody 6-1, 6-0 in the first round before losing to Mount Airy’s Carrie Marion/Audrey Brown 0-6, 6-3, 0-6 in the semifinals.
VOLLEYBALL
Union Academy 3, Draughn 0
The No. 9 West seed Lady Wildcats (15-8) saw their season come to an end in the second round of the NCHSAA 1A state playoffs with a straight-sets loss to the No. 8 West seed Lady Cardinals (15-9) on Thursday in Monroe.
Union Academy swept the match 25-16, 25-17, 25-12 to advance to the third round.
There late Saturday, the Lady Cardinals visited No. 1 West seed Cherokee (23-1), which knocked off No. 32 West seed South Davidson (4-15) in the first round and No. 16 West seed Leadership Academy (18-6) in the second round, both in home sweeps in Cherokee.
The winner of Saturday’s match will advance to meet either No. 4 West seed Uwharrie Charter (28-3) or No. 5 West seed Cornerstone Charter (25-2) in the 1A West Regional semifinals on Tuesday.
JV FOOTBALL
Freedom 56, Ashe County 6
The JV Patriots (5-3, 1-2 Northwestern 3A/4A Conf.) earned their first league victory in a blowout in a home game played at AV¶ÌÊÓƵ’s Patton High School on Thursday.
Jusian Perkins got the scoring started with an 81-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and later in the frame expanded the advantage to 14-0 after a 46-yard TD run and Christian Chapman’s two-point conversion. Trenton Davis scored next for FHS on a 22-yard touchdown run, which was followed by Izaiah Thomas’ two-point conversion. A 67-yard Chapman TD run plus a Perkins conversion made it 30-0. Freedom recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and returned it for a TD for a 36-0 lead. Davis’ 46-yard TD run and Thomas’ following conversion made the halftime lead 44-0.
Rico Gonzalez scored on a 14-yard run in the third quarter to make it 50-0, then Jalen Mills ran one in from 50 yards out to put the hosts ahead 56-0 before the JV Huskies tacked on a late TD to set the final margin.
Patton 44, Chase 6
The JV Panthers (3-3, 1-1 Mountain Foothills 7 1A/2A Conf.) reached .500 both overall and in the conference with a comfortable win on the road in Henrietta on Thursday.
Jett Chatman led the PHS offense with two rushing touchdowns, and Urijah Rhoda also scored once on the ground. River McCrary had a receiving TD for Patton. The visitors also scored two defensive touchdowns, including McCrary’s pick-six and Logan Williams’ fumble recovery and return for a score.
Rhoda has two interceptions for the JV Panthers’ defense and Lane Charlet forced a fumble. Brody Suttles was the team’s leading tackler with 11.
East Burke 22, West Lincoln 16
The JV Cavaliers (2-5, 1-3 CVAC) picked up their first conference win of the fall, coming out ahead in Thursday’s home game in Icard.
EBHS’ offense was led by ball-carriers Izan Hang (24-189-2) and Jesiah Rees (18-160-1), who also accounted for a pair of two-point conversions.
On defense, EB was led by Tucker Gantt (seven tackles, forced fumble), Hunter Martin (seven tackles), Leelan Pyatte (six tackles), Cash Wittenberg (five tackles, one for loss, fumble recovery), Easton Wilson (four tackles, interception, forced fumble) and Joseph Lee (two tackles, fumble recovery).
